"SELECT-A-DO"
Moorland Folk's guide to planning your event.
We
make it work for you!
1.
What sort of "do"?
Pub
or cabaret style (lively chatting audience)
Concert
seating (listening audience)
After-dinner
show
Intimate
group
House
party
Background
atmosphere
BarBQs
and Garden parties
Do
you expect the audience to dance?
if so we can make the last hour lively celtic rock.
2.
What type of music? -
<what's the band like>
Lively
Rocky Show
Sing-along
favourites / requests
Gentle
thoughtful ballads / stories
Gentle
start - big finish
3.
Any special theme?
Contemporary
/ Popular Mix
Lancashire
songs / Northern humour
Irish
night or Celtic mix
Musical
Hall / Old English
Traditional
/ Modern Folk
Just
name your theme and we'll work on it!
Our lead guitarist, Dylan Owen, is the Ossey Bard himself!
He'd love to give you a cabaret slot of his zany topical songs.
4.
How long a show do you need?
We
give you a full night's entertainment.
You
don't need a disco with the Moorland Folk! Two, three or four
spots? Three hours of non-stop music if that's what you'd like!
5. Tips - think
about ............
Lighting - good lighting over the band,
subdued elsewhere.
Seating arrangements - too spread out
doesn't work as well.
Size of tables - if too big people can't
talk across them easily.
Dance area - usually in front of band but if
too big an area then the band is too far from the audience for the early
(non dancing) part of the evening.
Finishing time - what time do you
realistically expect people to want to leave. Maybe you have a bar till
12 midnight. It can work well to end at 11.30pm then extend the encore.
This allows folk to leave easily from 11.30pm. Similarly if the audience
includes senior citizens or families with children. They may appreciate a
proper finish at 10.30pm allowing them to leave. We'll be happy to carry
on again after a brief break and entertain the remaining enthusiasts!
6. Add-On other
performers?
Fancy some Smooth Sax for your event? Poss. during the meal, or
break?
Paddy Higginson create a classy atmosphere playing jazz, swing and blues.
More comedy?
Singer songwriter Dave Metcalfe will provide a cabaret slot of
sharp witty local humour in classic Bob Dylan style.
PLUS we work with a number of other local bands and artistes
- just let us know what you'd fancy and we'll get them for you.
Just give us a call, we can sort all this out on the
phone.
Whatever
we do it will be fun! We aim to involve our audience as much as
possible, grabbing their attention with catchy rhythms, striking
harmonies, popular hits, moving stories, a touch of rock and loads of
fun. We get to know our audience during the breaks, find out
what makes 'em tick and include lots of their requests later in the evening.
30
years of fun and entertainment
at
the end of a phone line!

A bit more about the band
(take this bit back to your committee!)
We are a 3-piece band based in Blackburn playing what could now be
described as “Lancashire Celtic Folk Rock”. The band was formed in 1975
and has played regularly ever since (over 1000 gigs so far) in pubs,
clubs, festivals and private events of all kinds. We are currently
regulars at the Farmer’s Glory, Haslingden Old Rd (for over 20yrs), Bay
Horse, Osbaldeston and the Alex, Dukes Brow Blackburn.
We can offer a wide variety of styles or themed music
evenings, humour and stories. We involve our audience, respond to
requests, back members of the audience doing a turn and can put on a show
to suit all age ranges from music hall to Celtic ceilidh styles. Our
origins were with the Fivepenny Piece so we are very much at home with a
Lancashire evening; we’ve regularly performed for St Pat’s night and
Scottish events. Our brilliant guitarist Dylan Owen is a star in his own
right with his own hilarious and crazy songs many with local themes and
provides a mini cabaret in the middle of our show. We are played
regularly on local radio particularly our versions of local songs such as
“Old Pendle”.
